Social Anxiety is more than just shyness felt during social events, it is a crippling fear of embarrassing yourself in front of others. This fear makes people avoid such situations altogether or feel extremely uncomfortable while they are in them. They might feel physical discomfort, including increased heart rate, sweaty palms, breathlessness, shaking, and may avoid eye contact. A person anxious of social gatherings is afraid that people are laughing at them, worries about sounding stupid in front of others, unable to say much for fear of coming across as boring, even the smallest mistakes would seem humiliating to them.
